Milsons Passage
Getting here
Outside peak hour traffic the drive from Sydney to Kangaroo Point/ Brooklyn is less than an hour, then add about a 15 minute boat trip & you are here! The local water taxi as well as easy to drive hire boats are available if renting a holiday house. If you have your own boat then Milsons passage is a wonderful base camp for exploring the waterway system.
MILSON’S PASSAGE is a cluster of charming original cottages, boatsheds & renovated weekenders just a few kilometres upstream by boat, from the M1 Freeway & the Hawkesbury River Bridge.
Local residents generally travel to & from Brooklyn by their own boat. This river settlement of approx. 40 houses is dependant on rainwater catchment & storage for their household water supply. Mail is delivered Mon- Fri by the Riverboat Postman, can also be booked as a day trip on the river joining their mail run. There are no shops so all food & beverage is taken in by boat. Garbage is the also carried out by boat to the mainland bins as there is no river garbage service
Most houses are privately owned by Sydneysiders who come to stay nearly every weekend. There is always something to observe from the sanctuary of a comfortable chair, as the passage itself is regularly used by boats travelling further upstream.
Peats Bite Restaurant ( 02 9985 9040 ) is just a few kilometres away by boat, & a favourite weekend destination for a long lunch. Spencer Village Store (02 4377 1123) is another 10 kilometres up river by boat & the place to pick up the weekend papers, general supplies & perhaps stop in for a big breakfast. For those with their own boat or hiring one, there are small river beaches & many kilometres of pristine shoreline to explore.
